Wedding Inspo: Ever After (2024)

We are in the midst of fall and on the brink of All Hallow’s Eve, but now is the perfect time to plan a late winter wedding. Late winter is a strange time of year, as there is still a chill in the air and snow on the ground, but the hope of spring has started to blossom. That is exactly why this blog post centers around Ever After, an AMAZING movie from 1998 that stars Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, and Dougray Scott. Like plenty of other movies, it is a spin on the class fairytale Cinderella, but I would argue that the story and atmosphere in this film is the best of all adaptations. Set in the midst of the Renaissance in France (Leonardo da Vinci is a central character in the film) Ever After explores the story of the orphaned Danielle, whose wicked stepmother and stepsister prevent her from her inheritance and freedom. When a fellow servant is taken away for owing a debt, she dresses up in her mother’s clothes (a noblewoman) to free him. Here, she meets the prince of France, who is currently fighting against an arranged marriage, and it’s love at first sight. From this point on, a beautiful love story unfolds, complete with a beautiful atmosphere, rich colors and dramatic details. Let’s get started!

Bridal Wear

Also known as the ‘Just Breathe’ gown, Danielle’s wedding dress is the epitome of Renaissance style with its off the shoulder sleeves, empire waistline, and stunning beaded detail. Our ‘Katherine’ gown has some similar aspects in the beaded lace and off the shoulder sleeves, nodding subtly to the stunning dress in the film. While we could definitely create a very similar gown for you, keeping in mind the detailed sleeves, off the shoulder cut, and higher waistline will help you mimic the French Renaissance style.

Groomswear

A velvet suit is the perfect way capture the essence of the Renaissance in a very modern way. Keep the fit more straight and thin, and the accessories simple to really let the suit and its fabric shine. Keep the shade dark; navy blue would look amazing in the winter sunlight or under twinkling lights.

Bridal Beauty

Since the film is set in the Renaissance in France, hair and makeup was pretty natural and without extra adornment (nothing heavy, not bright colors, etc.). A modern take would be to have a soft natural look emphasizing your natural features, with a mauve lip and shimmery eyes. A modern take Danielle’s braided do would include a thicker/messier braid and long, loose waves. Overall, the look is natural and unfunny, but updated and perfect for wedding photos. However, don’t be afraid to wear a hair wreath or a draped veil.

Wedding Colors

You will want rich tones for this wedding, as the movie has plenty of rich fabrics and ornate details (like velvet, beading, etc.). Use maroon and different shades of green, as well as deep shapes of blue (deep royal blue could also be an option). Light gold would be a nice accent color, but it would be best to use it sparingly and as a strict accent. The mood is to have rich, emotional colors, nothing too bright or pastel.

Wedding Flowers

The bouquet should be large and with greenery, with some natural shape and an imperfect balance. Colors should be warm but balanced with creams. Pretty much, the bouquet should be natural but with beautiful, luxurious flowers.

Wedding Decor

You may not be able to have your ceremony at a castle, but you should at least try and make it feel like you are in a cozy palace. Hung greenery creates a warm and natural atmosphere against hard stone, and gold accents and candles add opulence. Drawings add an extra sense of luxury, and streamlined seating adds a sense of formality.

Food

Now, Ever After is set in France, but we have recommended so much French food on here before that we decided to focus on the Italian roots of Leonardo da Vinci, an important character in the film. Rustic Italian foods are sure to be a crowd favor, and recipes like grilled panzanetta salad, Italian wedding soup, caprese salad, charcuterie boards, and wedding favors of olive oil and wine. These Italian comfort foods are lighter than pizza and pasta but still robust and full of flavor.
